Quick take

  • Build phone agents that answer and make calls, book appointments, send texts and transfer to staff.
  • From $0.14 a minute with no monthly fee, and that price includes the AI model and the voice. Phone lines are billed separately.
  • Norm builds a first agent from a description you type, but tuning one for real callers still takes testing.
  • It overlaps heavily with Retell AI. Retell is friendlier for small businesses, while Bland leans towards developers and large companies.

What is Bland AI?

Bland lets you build AI agents that talk on the phone. You give an agent a script or a step-by-step conversation map (Bland calls these Pathways), connect a phone number, and it answers incoming calls or rings people for you in a natural voice. It can look things up in your knowledge base, book appointments, send texts during the call and transfer the caller to a person.

Its per-minute price includes the AI model, the speech recognition and the voice, so there are no separate bills from other providers. That's the main difference from Retell AI and Vapi, which charge a lower platform fee and pass the model and voice costs on. Norm, released in March 2026, builds a working phone agent from a description you type, which makes the first agent much quicker to set up. Bland also has SOC 2, HIPAA and GDPR paperwork for businesses that need it.

The catch: Bland started as a tool for developers and is now aimed at large companies, so small businesses will find Retell AI easier to get going. Independent tests measure response times slower than Bland advertises, and reviewers report agents sometimes making up details like prices or policies. You also pay for phone lines separately, and you're responsible for consent rules on outbound calls.
