4.5our rating

Quick take

  • The fast, tidy tracker that startups pick over Jira for bugs, features and roadmaps.
  • Free covers unlimited members but only 250 issues and 2 teams. Basic is $10 and Business $16 per user a month, billed yearly.
  • Linear Agent can turn an issue into code and a pull request. Coding sessions and Loops are paid from prepaid AI credits.
  • An official MCP server means Claude and Claude Code can read, create and update your issues.
  • Built for software teams. Non-technical teams are usually better off in Asana or monday.com.

What is Linear?

Linear is a project tracker built for teams that make software. You log issues (bugs, features, tasks), group them into projects and cycles (short sprints), and plan bigger goals as initiatives on a roadmap. It's known for being very fast and tidy, with keyboard shortcuts for everything, which is why so many startups pick it over Jira.

The AI is built in. Linear Agent can pick up an issue, write the code and open a pull request (a proposed code change) in a coding session. Loops run agent work in the background. On Business and up, Triage Intelligence sorts incoming issues and suggests owners and labels, and Code Intelligence answers questions about your codebase. Linear also has an official MCP server, so Claude and Claude Code can read and update your issues.

The catch: it's built for product and engineering teams. A marketing team or agency running client projects will usually be happier in Asana or monday.com. Coding sessions and Loops are paid from prepaid AI credits on top of your plan, and the free plan stops at 250 issues.
