Quick take

  • A full helpdesk that can grow from a few agents to thousands, with phone, chat, email and social in one place.
  • Suite Team starts at $55 per agent a month billed yearly ($69 monthly). That's the cheapest plan with AI agents and live chat.
  • AI agents include only 5 to 10 resolutions per agent a month; after that each one costs about $2. Copilot is $50 per agent on top.
  • Strong when you need routing, service targets and reporting. Overkill and admin-heavy for a team of two or three.

What is Zendesk?

Zendesk is one of the longest-running helpdesks. Customer emails, chats, calls and social messages become tickets in one place, your team works them in a shared view, and rules route each one to the right person. On top of that sit AI agents that answer customers on chat and email using your help centre, and Copilot, which suggests replies, summarises long tickets and spots intent for your human agents.

Pick Zendesk when you run a larger support team, take phone calls as well as chat, or need detailed routing, service targets and reporting across several brands. It has a huge marketplace of add-ons and most business software connects to it. Intercom feels more modern and its AI agent is generally rated higher; Hiver is simpler and cheaper for small teams working out of Gmail.

The catch: the price grows with every agent, add-on and AI resolution. Each plan includes only 5 or 10 automated resolutions per agent a month, then you pay about $2 each, and Copilot is another $50 per agent. Admins also say it takes real effort to set up and maintain, and users report slow help from Zendesk's own support.

Which plan should you pick?

Support Team only makes sense for email-only teams. Most businesses wanting AI and live chat should trial Suite Professional (the trial includes Copilot), then work out how many AI resolutions they will use, because extra resolutions at about $2 each can cost more than the seats.

Best use cases

Ways Zendesk can slot into your week.

  1. 1

    Deflect routine questions

Put an AI agent on chat to handle order status, password resets and returns, so agents spend their time on harder tickets.

  2. 2

    Run a small contact centre

Take calls, chats and emails in one view, with each one routed to whoever is free and skilled for it.

  3. 3

    Speed up replies

Let Copilot summarise a long ticket history and draft the answer for an agent to check and send.

  4. 4

    Report on support performance

Track response times, backlog and satisfaction by team or brand, and spot topics that need a help article.

How it fits your tech stack

It sits at the centre of a support operation and connects to most CRMs, stores and chat tools through a large marketplace. Many teams pair it with Salesforce or HubSpot for customer records and Slack for internal escalation.
