Opera's free gaming browser with resource limits, mods and a free AI sidebar.

Opera One
Opera's free everyday browser with a built-in AI sidebar that reads your tabs.
Quick take
- A free Chrome-style browser with Opera AI in the corner. It reads the page or a group of tabs and answers questions, summarises and compares.
- It's free, with no account needed. Signing in to a free Opera account only raises the daily image limit.
- It's an assistant, not an agent. It won't click through sites or fill in forms for you; for that, look at Comet or Opera Neon.
- Page access is off until you allow it, but what you share goes to Opera and Google.
What is Opera One?
Opera One is the main desktop browser from Opera, the Norwegian company that has made browsers since the 1990s. It runs on the same engine as Chrome, so Chrome extensions work, and it comes with a free VPN, an ad blocker, WhatsApp and Messenger in the sidebar, and Tab Islands, which group related tabs together and let you name and colour them. Its AI assistant, called Aria until early 2026 and now just Opera AI, sits behind an Ask AI button in the top corner and runs on Google's Gemini models.
Day to day, Opera AI answers questions about the page you're on or a whole Tab Island, summarises articles and YouTube videos, compares the pages in a group, reads files you upload, translates, drafts text and makes images. It's free and works without signing in. What it doesn't do is click through websites for you. Opera added a Browser Connector in April 2026 that lets ChatGPT or Claude read your open tabs, but it was still an opt-in test feature and can't fill in forms. Pick Opera One if you want a free, polished browser with a handy AI sidebar and lots of built-in extras; pick Comet if you want an agent that can do tasks on websites; pick Opera Neon if you'll pay for Opera's agent.
The catch is that Opera AI is a helper, not an agent, and Opera doesn't publish usage limits or say exactly which Gemini model you get. Page access is off until you allow it and the AI doesn't see your history, but anything you share goes to Opera's servers and its model partners, so keep it off banking and medical sites as Opera itself advises. The browser also shows sponsored speed dials and news by default.

Key features
Opera AI sidebar
Ask about the current page or a whole Tab Island, summarise, compare tabs, translate and draft text. Runs on Google Gemini.
Tab Islands
Related tabs group themselves into islands you can name, colour and collapse, and the AI can use an island as context.
Files and video
Upload PDFs, spreadsheets, Word files, images or audio and ask questions, or get the gist of a YouTube video.
Browser Connector
Lets ChatGPT or Claude read your open tabs and take screenshots, so you stop copying and pasting. Opt-in test feature since April 2026.
Built-in extras
Free VPN, ad blocker, page translator, music player and messaging apps in the sidebar, with Gmail and Google Calendar added in 2026.
Privacy switches
Page access is off until you allow it, and three switches turn off the AI, its button and the highlight prompts.

Best use cases
Ways Opera One can slot into your week.
- 1
Get the gist fast
Open a long report or a competitor's pricing page and ask for the five points that matter to your business.
- 2
Compare quotes
Put three supplier sites in one Tab Island and ask Opera AI to line them up on price, minimums and delivery.
- 3
Skip the video
Ask for a summary of a 40 minute YouTube webinar, then ask follow-up questions about the bits you care about.
- 4
Reply in another language
Have it translate a customer's email and draft a polite reply you can check before sending.
How it fits your tech stack
Opera One replaces Chrome or Edge rather than sitting beside them, and your extensions and bookmarks come across. If you already pay for ChatGPT or Claude, the Browser Connector lets them see your tabs. For an AI that does tasks on websites, Comet (free) or Opera Neon (paid) go further.
