Anthropic's chat assistant, at its best on careful writing and long documents.

Claude Cowork
Claude's agent mode: hand it a whole task across your files, apps and browser.
Quick take
- Give it the job, not the steps: it plans, works through your files, apps and browser, and hands back finished documents.
- Now part of the main Claude app (merged 16 September 2026), rolling out to Pro and Max first. You need the desktop app for local files.
- No extra fee on top of a paid Claude plan, but agent tasks eat usage fast. Heavy users end up on Max.
- Scheduled tasks only run while your computer is on with Claude open. There is no cloud fallback yet.
- Leave approvals on for anything that sends, deletes or pays. Prompt injection from untrusted files is a real risk.
What is Claude Cowork?
Claude Cowork is the agent side of Claude. Instead of answering one message at a time, it takes a whole job, makes a plan and works through it: reading and editing files in folders you choose, pulling data from connected apps like Google Drive, Slack or Microsoft 365, using a built-in browser for websites and forms, and, as a last resort, taking over your screen. It splits big jobs into pieces that run side by side, can run tasks on a schedule (a Monday metrics report, say), and you can start a task from your phone and check on it later. It is built on the same agent as Claude Code, packaged for people who don't write code.
Since 16 September 2026 Cowork is no longer a separate tab: Anthropic merged it into the main Claude app, so any conversation can turn into a hand-off task. It is rolling out to Pro and Max first, with Team and Free to follow. It still needs the Claude desktop app to reach the files and apps on your computer. Pick it over Zapier or n8n when the job needs judgement (reading contracts, writing a report, tidying a messy folder) rather than a fixed trigger-and-action flow, and over Manus or Comet when the work lives in your own files and business apps rather than on the open web.
The catch: agent tasks use up your plan's limits far faster than chat, and Pro users report running out mid-month. Long jobs sometimes stall or get things wrong, scheduled tasks only run while your computer is awake with the app open, and files carrying hidden instructions can trick it (Anthropic acknowledges this). Keep "ask before acting" on for anything that sends, deletes or spends, and actually read the approvals.
