Opera's free everyday browser with a built-in AI sidebar that reads your tabs.

Opera GX
Opera's free gaming browser with resource limits, mods and a free AI sidebar.
Quick take
- Opera's gaming browser with GX Control to cap memory, processor and network use, plus mods, GX Corner and Twitch and Discord in the sidebar.
- The AI is the same free Opera AI as Opera One: page and tab questions, summaries, files, translation and images, powered by Google Gemini.
- It's an assistant, not an agent. It won't do tasks on websites for you.
- Heavier than most browsers unless you set the limits, and the gamer look can feel out of place for client work.
What is Opera GX?
Opera GX is the gaming version of Opera's browser, from the same Norwegian company that makes Opera One. It runs on the Chrome engine but looks and feels like gaming gear: GX Control lets you cap how much memory, processor and internet speed the browser uses so your game doesn't stutter, Hot Tab Killer shows which tabs are hogging resources, GX Corner lists game deals, free games and release dates, and Mods change the look, sounds and even keyboard clicks. Twitch, Discord and Spotify sit in the sidebar.
The AI is the same Opera AI that's in Opera One, running on Google Gemini. It answers questions about the page or a group of tabs, summarises articles and YouTube videos, reads files, translates and makes images, including wallpapers sized for your screen. The June 2026 update added Gemini to the sidebar and Opera's Browser Connector, which lets ChatGPT or Claude read your open tabs. Pick GX if you game on the same PC you work on and want the resource limits and gaming extras; pick Opera One for the same free AI in a calmer, more business-like browser; pick Comet or Opera Neon if you want an agent that does tasks for you.
The catch is that the AI is a helper, not an agent, and it isn't the reason to choose GX. It's one of the heavier browsers when idle unless you set the limits, the gamer styling and GX Corner can feel noisy for work, and its marketing leans young. Opera AI sends what you share to Opera and Google, so keep page access off on banking and client sites.

Best use cases
Ways Opera GX can slot into your week.
- 1
Work while you game
Cap the browser's memory use so a long spreadsheet or Shopify tab doesn't slow your game or stream.
- 2
Skip the long video
Ask Opera AI to summarise a tutorial or patch notes video and pull out the steps you need.
- 3
Compare gear or software
Group product pages in a Tab Island and ask the AI to compare specs and prices.
- 4
Make stream graphics
Generate wallpapers or quick images sized for your screen or channel.
How it fits your tech stack
GX replaces Chrome for people who game on the same machine they work on. Its AI is identical to Opera One's, so if you don't care about the gaming features, Opera One is the tidier choice. For agent tasks, add Comet or Opera Neon.
