What is it?

Neon is just the database part of a backend, done very well. It is standard Postgres, hosted for you, that switches off when nobody is using it and wakes up on the next request, so quiet projects cost nothing.

Its standout feature is branching: you can copy your whole database in seconds to try a change safely, the same way developers branch code. Neon's official connection lets Claude Code create databases, run queries and make changes to the structure from the terminal. Vercel's database offering is built on it.

It does not include logins, file storage or a dashboard for editing data, so you pair it with other tools. If you want everything in one place, choose Supabase instead.

Who it's for

Developers and Claude Code users who want a dependable Postgres database and nothing else.

Best for

  • Postgres for side projects
  • Safe database experiments with branching
  • Apps hosted on Vercel
  • Usage-based pricing

Why it made the list

The cheapest way to run real Postgres for many small projects, and the branching feature is genuinely useful.
