What is it?

Appwrite gives you the whole backend in one place: a database, user sign-in, file storage, server functions, messaging and website hosting. You set it all up from one dashboard and don't have to stitch separate services together.

It's open source, so you can use Appwrite Cloud or run it on your own server and keep full control of your data. Its official connection lets Claude Code create collections, manage users and work with your project from the terminal.

It has fewer users than Supabase or Firebase, so you'll find fewer tutorials and fewer AI builders that support it out of the box. Pick it when you want an open-source Firebase you could move onto your own server later.

Who it's for

Builders who want Firebase-style convenience without being tied to one company's cloud.

Best for

  • Open-source Firebase alternative
  • Self-hosted backends
  • Logins, storage and functions in one place
  • Hosting the front end and backend together

Why it made the list

It's the most complete open-source backend, and it covers hosting as well as data and logins.
