What is it?

Deep research is a mode inside ChatGPT. Give it a question and it plans a search, reads through dozens of websites and PDFs, then writes a long report with links to where each point came from. It takes several minutes, sometimes longer, so you can leave it running and come back.

It usually asks a couple of questions first to pin down what you want, then pulls scattered information into one clear write-up. That suits market scans, buying decisions and getting across a topic you know nothing about.

The reports can run long and sometimes lean on weak sources, so skim the citations on anything important. Perplexity is quicker if you just need a sourced answer, and Gemini's version suits people who live in Google Docs.

Who it's for

ChatGPT users who want a proper write-up on a question and are happy to wait a few minutes for it.

Best for

  • Market and industry scans
  • Comparing products or suppliers
  • Background briefs on a new topic
  • Reading lots of sources at once

Why it made the list

It's the research mode most people already have, and its reports are among the most complete around.
