Which plan to pickIf you have Plus already, you are set; its deep research allowance covers most people. Do not buy ChatGPT just for research unless you also want the rest of it, because Perplexity Pro costs less and is faster. Pro is only worth it if you run reports every day.Try the free plan first; it is enough to see the style of report you get. If you want it weekly, Google AI Pro is the pick because the Pro model writes better reports and the same subscription upgrades NotebookLM and Gemini in Gmail and Docs.Stay on Free until it stops you doing something. If that happens, Google AI Pro is the sensible step because it also upgrades Gemini and Deep Research, which you will probably want anyway. AI Plus is a cheap middle step if NotebookLM is all you care about.

Pros and cons

AttributeChatGPT Deep ResearchGemini Deep ResearchNotebookLM
Pros
  • Clarifying questions up front mean fewer wasted runs
  • Among the most complete and well-structured reports of the three
  • Runs in the background and notifies you when done
  • Can bring your own files and connected apps into the research
  • Exports to PDF with charts and tables
  • You can edit the plan before it runs, so fewer wasted reports
  • Reads more pages than Perplexity and lists every source
  • Can include your Gmail and Drive in the research
  • Free plan includes it, and Pro is good value for Workspace users
  • Audio Overviews and Canvas make the output easy to share
  • Answers only from your sources and cites the exact passage
  • Free plan is big enough for most small businesses
  • Accepts PDFs, Docs, websites, YouTube and audio as sources
  • Audio Overviews are a clever way to get people to engage with research
  • Simple enough that you can hand it to anyone on the team
Cons
  • Slowest of the three; 10 to 30 minutes is normal
  • Free and Go allowances are tiny and described only as limited
  • Reports run long and occasionally cite weak sources
  • Pro usage allowances have been cut for new subscribers
  • Reports are long and often repetitive; plan to edit
  • Can take ten minutes or more per run
  • Free limits are not published as a number, so you find them by hitting them
  • Quieter on citation quality than Perplexity; weak sources slip in
  • Will not research the open web unless you explicitly ask it to find sources
  • Answers can be surface-level on dense material; you still need to read the key parts
  • Audio Overviews take a few minutes and sound alike after a while
  • No way to script or automate it; everything happens in the browser
