OpenRouter

One account and one API key for hundreds of AI models, paid for at the makers' prices.

FreemiumFrom Model prices plus a 5.5% fee on credit top-upsWorks with Claude Code

Quick take

  • One account, one key and one bill for 500-plus models. Swapping from Claude to Gemini to DeepSeek is a one-word change in your code.
  • Model prices are passed through at list price; you pay a 5.5% fee when you top up credit. Bring your own provider keys and the first $25,000 a month of usage is fee-free.
  • The free tier gives 25-plus free models at 50 requests a day, rising to 1,000 a day once you have bought $10 of credit. Free models are often slow or busy.
  • Quality varies by provider. The same open model can score noticeably worse on one host than another, so pin the providers that test well for your job.
  • Stripe agreed to buy OpenRouter in August 2026, reportedly for about $7.5 billion. It still runs under its own name while regulators review the deal.

What is OpenRouter?

OpenRouter is a single front door to more than 500 AI models from over 80 providers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, Qwen and dozens of open models. You load credit once, get one API key, and can then call any of them. Token prices are passed through at each provider's list price, and OpenRouter takes a 5.5% fee when you buy credits. It also has a simple chat room on the website for trying models side by side.

Use it when you are building an AI feature into a product or internal tool and don't want to sign up, bill and code against five different AI companies. It can fall back to another provider when one goes down, route requests by price or speed, and cap spending per key. It is also the cheapest way to try a new model the day it launches, and some models are free. If you only ever use one model, going direct to that company is simpler.

The catch is that the same open model can behave differently depending on which provider OpenRouter sends you to; some hosts are slower, cut corners on tool use or quietly return empty answers. Free models are rate limited and often busy. Unused credit can expire after a year, refunds are only offered within 24 hours of a purchase, and Stripe has agreed to buy the company (August 2026, still awaiting approval).

Who's using it, and who it's for

  • Developers
  • SaaS founders
  • AI app builders
  • Agencies
  • Hobbyists

Business owners and developers adding AI to a product, and anyone who wants to try lots of models cheaply from one account.

Key features

  • 500-plus models, one API

Call OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral and many open models with the same code and key.

  • Automatic fallback

If a provider is down or rate limited, the request moves to another host of the same model so your app keeps working.

  • Auto Router

Let OpenRouter pick a model for each prompt, with cost tiers from low to max and no extra fee.

  • Budgets and spend controls

Set limits per API key or workspace so a runaway script or agent can't burn through your credit.

  • Privacy routing

Prompts aren't logged by default, and you can block providers that train on or retain your data.

  • Chat room

Try models side by side in the browser before you write any code. Chats stay on your device.

Best use cases

Ways OpenRouter can slot into your week.

  1. 1

Add AI to a product without lock-in

Build your chatbot, summariser or quote writer against OpenRouter, then switch models later as prices drop without rewriting anything.

  2. 2

Cut the AI bill on bulk jobs

Send repetitive work like tagging, translating or summarising to a cheap open model, and keep the expensive one for the hard calls.

  3. 3

Test a new model the day it lands

New releases, and some free preview models, appear on OpenRouter within hours. Try them on your real prompts before committing.

  4. 4

Keep your app up during outages

Fallbacks route around a provider that is down, so customers don't see errors when one AI company has a bad day.

  5. 5

    Give coding tools more models

Plug an OpenRouter key into tools like Cline, OpenCode or Copilot to use models those tools don't offer by default.

How it fits your tech stack

It sits between your app or automation and the AI companies. Most AI tools that accept an OpenAI-style API key can point at OpenRouter instead, so it slots into n8n, Make, coding agents and custom apps without much work.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • One key and one bill for nearly every model worth using
  • No markup on model prices, only a small fee on top-ups
  • Fallbacks and routing keep apps running when a provider fails
  • Free models and launch-day access make it cheap to experiment
  • Good privacy defaults, with no prompt logging unless you opt in

Cons

  • Output quality and speed depend on which provider serves the request, and some hosts are noticeably worse
  • Free models are rate limited, often busy and throw 429 errors at peak times
  • Unused credit can expire after a year and refunds are only offered within 24 hours
  • Support is slow by most accounts, and Trustpilot reviews are poor (about 1.6 out of 5)
  • It is an API tool first, so non-technical users get little beyond the basic chat room
