What is it?

GitHub Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant for programmers. It started as autocomplete that finishes your code and now also includes chat, a coding agent that can pick up a task on GitHub and open a pull request, and automated code review.

If your code already lives on GitHub, it is the path of least resistance. Assign it an issue and it works in the background, then hands you the changes to approve. It works inside VS Code, JetBrains and the GitHub website.

It is strongest for teams with an existing GitHub workflow. For a solo builder starting from scratch, Claude Code or Cursor will feel more direct.

Who it's for

Teams and developers whose code lives on GitHub and who want AI inside the tools they already use.

Best for

  • Autocomplete while you type
  • Handing GitHub issues to an agent
  • Automated code review
  • Teams already on GitHub

Why it made the list

The cheapest serious paid plan in the category and the only agent that is native to GitHub itself.
