An AI agent that works inside your project: it reads, writes and runs the code for you.

Amp
A coding agent that keeps working on remote machines after you close your laptop.
Quick take
- A coding agent from the Sourcegraph founders that runs each task on its own remote machine, called an orb, so work carries on when your laptop is shut.
- Free to use if you link a ChatGPT or Claude subscription or bring API keys, and run orbs on your own computers.
- Megawatt at $20 a month adds 750 hours of Amp-hosted orb time. Teams pay nothing extra on top of each person's tier.
- Developers rate it highly on large codebases, and it adds subagents, code review and live app previews you can share.
- Pricing and plan names have changed a few times in 2026, so check before you pay.
What is Amp?
Amp is a coding agent from the team that started Sourcegraph. Like Claude Code, it reads your project, writes the code and runs it. Its main idea is orbs: remote computers where each task gets its own copy of your project and keeps running after you close your laptop. You can start a task from the terminal, the desktop app, the web or your phone, then check in on it later.
Since September 2026 the agent itself is free if you bring your own model access. You can link a ChatGPT or Claude subscription, use your own API keys, or buy model usage through Amp at no markup, and run orbs on your own computers at no charge. You only pay Amp for its hosted orbs, which the $20 a month Megawatt plan includes 750 hours of. Teammates can share threads, take control of the same agent and preview the running app together.
The catch is that Amp is built for working developers. The orbs, runners and model routing are powerful but take a while to understand, and the pricing has changed several times this year, so check the pricing page before you commit.

- Developers
- Engineering teams
- Startups
- Large companies
Developers and engineering teams working on large codebases who want agents running in the background, not tied to their laptop.
Key features
Orbs
Each task runs on its own remote machine with a copy of your project, so you can run several at once and close your laptop.
Bring your own model
Link a ChatGPT or Claude subscription, use your own API keys, or buy usage through Amp at cost.
Portals
Preview the app the agent is building in your browser and share the link with teammates.
Multiplayer threads
Invite teammates into a thread to watch, take control of the agent or share its terminal.
Subagents and code review
Helper agents research and review in parallel, and Amp can follow up on comments on your GitHub pull requests.
Start from anywhere
Kick off work from the terminal, desktop app, web, Android or by assigning a Linear issue to Amp.

Best use cases
Ways Amp can slot into your week.
- 1
Hand off a feature and walk away
Start a task in an orb, close your laptop and review the result and the live preview when you're back.
- 2
Get your bearings in a big codebase
Ask how a part of the system works before changing it, and let subagents dig through the code in parallel.
- 3
Work a bug list in parallel
Assign several Linear issues to Amp and let each run in its own orb.
- 4
Review together
Share a thread and portal with a teammate so they can see exactly what the agent did and take over.
How it fits your tech stack
It works alongside your editor and GitHub, and can use the ChatGPT or Claude plan you already pay for. Many teams use it next to Claude Code or Codex for long background jobs.
