Quick take

  • One of the best image models available, and the strongest at editing a photo while keeping the face or product exactly the same.
  • Free to try in the Gemini app. Google AI Pro raises the limits and unlocks Nano Banana Pro for the best quality and 4K.
  • Developers pay about 7 US cents an image for Nano Banana 2 and 13 cents for Pro on the Gemini API, half that in batch.
  • Midjourney still wins on artistic style. Pick Nano Banana for realism, edits and anything that has to look like your real product.

What is Nano Banana?

Nano Banana is Google's family of image models, the generator inside the Gemini app, Google AI Studio and the Gemini API. Nano Banana 2 (Gemini 3.1 Flash Image) is the fast everyday model, Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) is the high-end one, and Nano Banana 2 Lite is the cheapest for volume work.

Editing is where it stands out. Upload a photo and ask for a different background, outfit, angle or lighting, and it changes just that while keeping the person or product looking the same. You can blend several reference images into one scene, and Pro renders sharp, correctly spelled text and goes up to 4K.

It's one of the best image models available right now. Midjourney still has the more artistic eye, but for realistic edits, product shots and consistent characters, Nano Banana is the one to beat, and it's built into apps like Canva, Higgsfield and Photoshop as well as Google's own.

Can look things up while it draws, which helps with infographics, maps and real-world details.

Build it into your own app or let Claude Code call it, with a Lite model for cheap volume work.
