Adobe's professional video editor, with Generative Extend, AI search and auto captions.

DaVinci Resolve
Pro video editing, colour and audio in one app, with a full-featured free version.
Quick take
- The free version is a complete professional editor, not a trial. Most businesses never need to pay.
- Studio is a one-off purchase (listed at $295, shown discounted to $236 when we checked) and adds the AI tools and higher-end features.
- Version 21 added IntelliSearch, CineFocus, an AI voice generator and a Photo page for still images.
- It has the steepest learning curve in this category. Budget time for tutorials.
- Needs a decent computer, ideally with a strong graphics card.
What is DaVinci Resolve?
DaVinci Resolve is a professional video editor from Blackmagic Design that combines editing, colour grading, visual effects, motion graphics and audio mixing in one desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux. It is used on feature films and TV, yet the free version covers almost everything a business needs. The paid Studio version, a one-off purchase, unlocks the AI tools from its Neural Engine: Magic Mask, text-based editing, smart reframing for vertical video, AI noise reduction, face recognition and IntelliSearch, which finds clips by what is in them or what was said.
Pick it when you want broadcast-quality results and do not want another subscription, or when colour and audio matter, such as brand films, product videos and long-form YouTube. Next to Adobe Premiere it is cheaper over time and stronger at colour; Premiere is easier if your team already lives in Adobe apps. For quick social clips, CapCut or Captions are much faster to learn.
The catch is the learning curve. Resolve has a lot of panels and terms, and a newcomer needs a few weekends of tutorials before they are quick. It also wants a reasonably powerful computer with a good graphics card, and several of the AI tools are Studio-only.
