Spellbook

Drafts, reviews and redlines contracts inside Microsoft Word.

3.9our rating
Paid

Quick take

  • The easiest way to get AI contract review into a legal team: it is a Word sidebar, so there is almost nothing to learn.
  • Prices are not published. You get a 7-day free trial, then a quote per seat, and reported prices rose in late 2025.
  • Playbooks are the reason teams stay: they make every reviewer push back on the same clauses in the same way.
  • Word only. If your team drafts in Google Docs, look elsewhere.

What is Spellbook?

Spellbook is a contract assistant that lives in a Microsoft Word sidebar. Open a contract and it flags risky or missing clauses, suggests redlines as tracked changes, drafts new clauses or whole agreements from your templates, and compares terms against what is normal in the market. Playbooks let a team save its standard positions so every reviewer pushes back the same way. A newer Associate agent works across several documents in a matter at once.

Pick Spellbook if most of your legal work is contracts and you want to stay in Word. It is aimed at small and mid-sized firms and in-house teams, and is much easier to buy and start than Harvey. Luminance is the heavier choice for big legal teams that also want a contract repository and approval workflows. CoCounsel suits research-heavy litigation work.

The catch: it only works in Word, so Google Docs teams are out. Prices are not published and reportedly went up in late 2025, and like any AI it sometimes suggests wrong or made-up language, so every redline needs a lawyer's eye.
