Sudowrite

A writing app for novelists that plans, drafts and edits fiction in your style.

PaidFrom $10/mo

Quick take

  • The most complete toolkit for writing fiction with AI: Story Bible, scene drafting, rewriting and feedback in one editor.
  • Plans are $10, $22 or $44 a month billed yearly and differ mainly in credits. Paying monthly costs a good deal more.
  • Prose quality is mixed. Some writers love Muse; others find it purple and clichéd and get better results from Claude for less.
  • Heavy drafters report running out of credits mid-month, and long imported drafts have caused glitches.
  • AI-written fiction is controversial with many readers, authors and publishers. Know the rules where you plan to publish.

What is Sudowrite?

Sudowrite is a writing app built only for fiction. You set up a Story Bible with your characters, world, synopsis and outline, and it helps you turn that into chapter beats and then scenes. Inside the editor you can ask it to write the next few hundred words, describe a scene with more sensory detail, expand a rushed moment, rewrite a passage or give you editor-style feedback. Its own fiction models, Muse and Ballad, sit alongside Claude and OpenAI models.

Pick it over a general assistant like Claude when you're working on a long book and want the tool to keep track of your characters and plot for you. Claude can match or beat its prose for a lot less money, but you have to manage the story notes and continuity yourself.

The catch: it runs on credits that heavy drafters burn through, the prose can tip into purple and cliché, and long imported manuscripts have caused bugs for some people. Many authors and writing communities are openly hostile to AI fiction, so check the rules of any contest, publisher or group before you use it.

Best use cases

Ways Sudowrite can slot into your week.

  1. 1

Turn an idea into an outline

Write a paragraph about your story and let the Story Bible build characters, a synopsis and chapter beats you can edit.

  2. 2

    Unstick a scene

Ask for three takes on the next 300 words, keep the line that works and write on from there.

  3. 3

    Add texture

Highlight a flat paragraph and use Describe to add sights, sounds and smells, then cut back what's too much.

  4. 4

    Get notes before an editor

Run a chapter through feedback or simulated beta readers to catch pacing and clarity problems early.

How it fits your tech stack

Use it as your drafting space for fiction. Most authors still finish in Word, Google Docs or Scrivener and use a human editor before publishing.
