QuillBot

Rewords, fixes grammar and summarises text, with an AI checker and humaniser built in.

FreemiumFrom $19.95/mo

Quick take

  • The fastest way to reword a sentence or fix a paragraph. Paste, pick a style, done. No prompt writing.
  • The free plan is fine for odd jobs, but it caps each paraphrase at 125 words and locks most rewrite styles.
  • Premium is $99.95 a year ($8.33 a month) or $19.95 month to month. Watch the renewal date: refund complaints about annual charges come up a lot.
  • Its AI detector and humaniser give mixed results. Don't treat either as proof, and don't count on the humaniser to get past a school's checker.
  • For writing a whole draft from scratch, Claude or ChatGPT are better tools. QuillBot is for polishing what you already have.

What is QuillBot?

QuillBot is a set of small writing tools in one place. Paste a sentence or paragraph and it rewords it in the style you pick (formal, simple, shorter, more fluent), fixes grammar and spelling, summarises long text into key points, generates citations and checks for plagiarism. It also has an AI detector and a "humaniser" that rewrites AI-sounding text, and it works inside Chrome, Word and Google Docs.

It is quicker than a chat assistant when you just want one paragraph tightened or said another way: no prompt to write, just paste and click. If you need a whole draft written or a document reasoned through, Claude or ChatGPT do far more. QuillBot is owned by Learneo, the company behind Course Hero, and most of its users are students and people writing in their second language.

The catch: the free plan stops at 125 words per paraphrase, its AI detector and humaniser give inconsistent results (QuillBot itself says not to rely on detection alone), and reworded text can drift from what you meant. Read every rewrite before you send it.

Students, non-native English writers and anyone who wants a paragraph cleaned up or reworded in one click.

Key features

  • Paraphraser

Rewords text in modes like Standard, Fluency, Formal, Simple, Shorter and Creative, or a custom style you describe.

  • Grammar checker

Fixes spelling, grammar and punctuation as you type, with tone suggestions on Premium.

  • Summariser

Turns a long article or reading into key-point bullets or a short paragraph.

  • AI detector and humaniser

Scores how AI-written text looks and rewrites it to sound more natural. Results vary, so treat both as a guide only.

  • Plagiarism checker and citations

Checks your work against published sources and builds references in APA, MLA and other styles.

  • Works where you write

Chrome extension, Word add-in, desktop and mobile apps, so you don't have to copy text back and forth.

How it fits your tech stack

It sits on top of the tools you already write in: the Chrome extension works in Gmail and Google Docs, and there's a Word add-in. Use it next to a chat assistant, which writes the draft while QuillBot polishes sentences.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Yearly Premium is cheap next to Grammarly or a chat assistant
  • Many rewrite styles, including ones you define yourself
  • Grammar, summaries, citations and plagiarism checks in one subscription

Cons

  • Free plan caps paraphrasing at 125 words per go and hides most modes
  • Reworded text can change your meaning or read awkwardly, so every rewrite needs checking
  • AI detector and humaniser are inconsistent, and the humaniser often still gets flagged by school checkers
  • Complaints about surprise annual renewals, refused refunds and constant upgrade pop-ups on the free plan
  • Owned by Learneo (Course Hero), and some users object to its data and privacy terms
