Speechify

Reads documents, web pages and photos of text aloud in natural voices, on any device.

FreemiumFrom $29/moWorks with Claude Code

Quick take

  • The easiest way to listen to anything you'd normally read: PDFs, web pages, emails and photos of printed pages.
  • People with ADHD and dyslexia often call it life-changing, because listening while the words highlight helps them focus.
  • Premium is $29 a month or $139 a year. The trial rolls into a paid plan unless you cancel, and monthly plans aren't refundable.
  • ElevenReader costs less for similar listening, and Edge and iPhone have free read-aloud built in. Try those first if your needs are simple.

What is Speechify?

Speechify reads text aloud. Open a PDF, a web page, an email or a photo of a printed page, and it reads it to you in a natural voice while highlighting the words, at up to five times normal speed. It works in a Chrome extension, on the web and in apps for iPhone, Android, Mac and Windows, so your reading follows you around. Newer features summarise documents, turn them into podcast-style audio and let you dictate text by voice.

It's the go-to for people with ADHD or dyslexia, students with heavy reading loads and anyone who wants to get through reports in the car. There's also a separate Speechify Studio for making voiceovers and dubbing videos, but for that job ElevenLabs is the better tool. If you only need basic read-aloud, try the free reader built into Microsoft Edge or your iPhone first.

The catch is billing. The free trial converts to a paid plan, often yearly, unless you cancel in time, and refunds are tight: monthly plans aren't refundable. ElevenReader does similar listening for less.
