What is it?

Postgres is the database most serious apps run on, and Neon is a hosted version that switches off when idle so you pay for almost nothing while building. This connector lets Claude create databases, run queries and branch your data.

Branching is the feature to notice: Claude can copy your database, try a change on the copy, and leave the real one untouched. Neon recommends the connector for development and testing rather than production data.

What Claude can do once it's connected

  • Create projects and databases in seconds
  • Run SQL queries and inspect tables
  • Create a branch of your data to test changes safely
  • Diagnose slow queries
  • Look up Neon's documentation

Install in Claude Code

Open your terminal in the project folder and run:

Command
claude mcp add --transport http neon https://mcp.neon.tech/mcp

You'll be asked to sign in or paste an API key the first time you use it.

Who it's for

Builders who want a plain Postgres database without Supabase's extra services.

Best for

  • Postgres for side projects
  • Safe test copies of your data
  • Query troubleshooting

Why it made the list

It is the cleanest hosted Postgres connector, with safe data branching built in.
