AWS MCP

Lets Claude look up AWS docs and run tasks in your AWS account with your permissions.

What is it?

AWS is Amazon's cloud, where a lot of websites and apps run. This is Amazon's own managed server: one address that lets Claude search AWS's docs and, once you sign in, do things in your account with the permissions you already have.

It's in Claude's connector directory, so on the web or desktop you add it under Settings > Connectors. In Claude Code, run the command below and sign in through your browser. Your AWS user needs one sign-in policy attached first. It has regions in Sydney, the US, Europe, Singapore and Tokyo.

Every action is logged in AWS CloudTrail, so you can see what Claude did. It can change real resources that cost money, so start with a user that can only read. AWS also publishes a large set of open-source servers for single services on GitHub (awslabs/mcp), but it now recommends this one.

What Claude can do once it's connected

  • Search the official AWS documentation for an answer
  • Check which services and features are available in which region
  • Run AWS commands in your account, like listing S3 buckets or checking a server
  • Run small Python scripts in a safe, separate space
  • Follow AWS's step-by-step guides for common jobs

Install in Claude Code

Open your terminal (the text window where you run Claude Code) in your project folder, then paste this command to connect it:

Command
claude mcp add aws-mcp https://aws-mcp.us-east-1.api.aws/mcp --transport http

Other ways to set it up:

Setup
# Closer to Australia? Use the Sydney address instead:
claude mcp add aws-mcp https://aws-mcp.ap-southeast-2.api.aws/mcp --transport http
# Before signing in, give your AWS user or role the AWSMCPSignInOAuthAccessPolicy policy.

The first time you use it, you'll be asked to sign in or paste an API key (a private code from the app that lets Claude use your account).

Who it's for

Anyone with a website, app or data on AWS, from solo builders to small dev teams.

Best for

  • Answering AWS questions
  • Checking what's running
  • Setting up services
  • Tracking down errors

Why it made the list

It's AWS's own server, it's free, and it replaces a pile of separate tools with one address.
