What is it?

GitHub is where most teams keep their code. This connector lets Claude Code read your repositories, open pull requests and check builds directly, instead of you copying things in and out by hand.

You sign in once through your browser, then ask things like "open a pull request for this change" or "what's blocking issue 42?". It is hosted by GitHub, so there is nothing to install.

What Claude can do once it's connected

  • Read and search your repositories, files and issues
  • Create branches, commits and pull requests
  • Review and comment on other people's pull requests
  • Check whether builds and automated tests passed
  • Triage and label issues

Install in Claude Code

Open your terminal in the project folder and run:

Command
claude mcp add --transport http github https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/

You'll be asked to sign in or paste an API key the first time you use it.

Who it's for

Anyone whose code, or whose team's code, lives on GitHub.

Best for

  • Opening pull requests from a prompt
  • Triaging issues
  • Code review
  • Checking build status

Why it made the list

It is the official server from GitHub, and the one you will use most once Claude is writing code for you.
