Which plan to pickStay on Free until it stops you doing something. If that happens, Google AI Pro is the sensible step because it also upgrades Gemini and Deep Research, which you will probably want anyway. AI Plus is a cheap middle step if NotebookLM is all you care about.Pro is the one. The free plan is too tight to judge research mode properly, and Max only makes sense if you want the Computer agent or you hit Pro limits every day. Businesses with a few people on it should look at Enterprise Pro for the admin controls.Try the free plan first; it is enough to see the style of report you get. If you want it weekly, Google AI Pro is the pick because the Pro model writes better reports and the same subscription upgrades NotebookLM and Gemini in Gmail and Docs.

Pros and cons

AttributeNotebookLMPerplexity (Research)Gemini Deep Research
Pros
  • Answers only from your sources and cites the exact passage
  • Free plan is big enough for most small businesses
  • Accepts PDFs, Docs, websites, YouTube and audio as sources
  • Audio Overviews are a clever way to get people to engage with research
  • Simple enough that you can hand it to anyone on the team
  • Reports land in minutes, not the quarter hour Gemini and ChatGPT often take
  • Every claim is linked, so you can check the ones that matter
  • Lets you pick which AI model answers on paid plans
  • Official connector for Claude Code and Claude Desktop
  • Good apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android
  • You can edit the plan before it runs, so fewer wasted reports
  • Reads more pages than Perplexity and lists every source
  • Can include your Gmail and Drive in the research
  • Free plan includes it, and Pro is good value for Workspace users
  • Audio Overviews and Canvas make the output easy to share
Cons
  • Will not research the open web unless you explicitly ask it to find sources
  • Answers can be surface-level on dense material; you still need to read the key parts
  • Audio Overviews take a few minutes and sound alike after a while
  • No way to script or automate it; everything happens in the browser
  • Free plan allows just one research run a month
  • Cites weak sources as confidently as strong ones
  • Only sees what is published on the open web; useless for your own documents
  • Usage limits on Pro are described as average use rather than a clear number
  • Reports are long and often repetitive; plan to edit
  • Can take ten minutes or more per run
  • Free limits are not published as a number, so you find them by hitting them
  • Quieter on citation quality than Perplexity; weak sources slip in
