Which plan to pickStay on Free until it stops you doing something. If that happens, Google AI Pro is the sensible step because it also upgrades Gemini and Deep Research, which you will probably want anyway. AI Plus is a cheap middle step if NotebookLM is all you care about.Pro is the one. The free plan is too tight to judge research mode properly, and Max only makes sense if you want the Computer agent or you hit Pro limits every day. Businesses with a few people on it should look at Enterprise Pro for the admin controls.Start free. The monthly $10 of credit is plenty for one person using it from Claude Code, and if you do run out you only pay for what you use. Enterprise is for software companies, not for a business that just wants better search.

Pros and cons

AttributeNotebookLMPerplexity (Research)Exa
Pros
  • Answers only from your sources and cites the exact passage
  • Free plan is big enough for most small businesses
  • Accepts PDFs, Docs, websites, YouTube and audio as sources
  • Audio Overviews are a clever way to get people to engage with research
  • Simple enough that you can hand it to anyone on the team
  • Reports land in minutes, not the quarter hour Gemini and ChatGPT often take
  • Every claim is linked, so you can check the ones that matter
  • Lets you pick which AI model answers on paid plans
  • Official connector for Claude Code and Claude Desktop
  • Good apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android
  • Finds pages by meaning, so vague descriptions still work
  • Free credit resets every month and needs no card
  • Hosted connection for Claude Code takes minutes to set up
  • Returns clean page text ready for an AI to read
  • Pay as you go with no subscription
Cons
  • Will not research the open web unless you explicitly ask it to find sources
  • Answers can be surface-level on dense material; you still need to read the key parts
  • Audio Overviews take a few minutes and sound alike after a while
  • No way to script or automate it; everything happens in the browser
  • Free plan allows just one research run a month
  • Cites weak sources as confidently as strong ones
  • Only sees what is published on the open web; useless for your own documents
  • Usage limits on Pro are described as average use rather than a clear number
  • Not much to use on its own; you need Claude or another assistant in front of it
  • Setup assumes some comfort with plugins or settings files
  • Per-request pricing is hard to predict if an agent runs away with searches
  • No mobile or desktop app, because it is a service rather than a product
