Which plan to pickSkip Plus unless you are happy with Grok. Premium is the realistic starting point if you want Claude or OpenAI models, and budget for the extra usage billing on top of the $30. There is also a $200 Ultra plan with 50x the Plus usage for people who live in it.Start on Pro. It is enough to build a small site or tool in evenings and weekends. If you hit the limit most days, Max 5x is the next step; it costs five times as much but usually works out cheaper than paying for the API directly. If you already have ChatGPT Plus, you have Codex: just try it. If you are choosing between this and Claude Code with no existing subscription, Plus at $20 and Claude Pro at $20 cost the same, so pick whichever chat assistant you prefer.

AttributeCursorClaude CodeOpenAI Codex
Pros
  • The clearest view of what an AI is doing to your code
  • Autocomplete is still the best in the category
  • Feels familiar instantly if you have used VS Code
  • Cloud agents and code review on the mid plans
  • Finishes real tasks end to end, not just suggestions you have to apply

  • CLAUDE.md, Skills and MCPs make it fit your way of working
  • One Claude subscription covers both chat and coding
  • Included with every ChatGPT plan, so many people already have it
  • Cloud tasks let you start work from anywhere and come back later
  • Strong on tough, multi-file coding jobs
  • The CLI is open source and works with an API key
Cons
  • Cheap plans only give you Grok models
  • Claude and OpenAI usage is billed on top of the subscription, so the real cost is hard to predict
  • The pricing page is confusing and has changed several times this year
  • Agent runs are less thorough than Claude Code on big tasks
  • No free tier, and the Pro usage cap can run out in an afternoon of heavy work
  • The terminal is intimidating for non-developers at first
  • It will happily change things you did not ask about unless you set boundaries
  • Costs on Max or the API add up fast for teams
  • Five-hour and weekly limits bite on Plus if you use it seriously
  • Cloud tasks use more of your allowance than local ones
  • It asks fewer questions than Claude Code before changing things
