Which plan to pickStart on Pro. It is enough to build a small site or tool in evenings and weekends. If you hit the limit most days, Max 5x is the next step; it costs five times as much but usually works out cheaper than paying for the API directly. Max also lets you spend up to half your weekly limit on Fable, which Pro only gets through paid credits. If you already have ChatGPT Plus, you have Codex: just try it. If you are choosing between this and Claude Code with no existing subscription, Plus at $20 and Claude Pro at $20 cost the same, so pick whichever chat assistant you prefer. If you outgrow Plus, Pro starts at $100 and has no five-hour limit for now. The $200 tier gives new subscribers less usage than it used to, and Ultrafast mode is only on the $500 tier.Start free to test, then top up $10 to $20 of credit on Pay as you go. That alone lifts the free-model limit to 1,000 requests a day. Only look at Business if you have a legal reason to keep data in a region.

Pros and cons

AttributeClaude CodeOpenAI CodexOpenRouter
Pros
  • Finishes real tasks end to end, not just suggestions you have to apply
  • Best-in-class at understanding a whole codebase before it changes anything
  • Runs in the terminal, desktop app, web, phone and the main editors
  • CLAUDE.md, Skills and MCPs make it fit your way of working
  • One Claude subscription covers both chat and coding
  • Included with every ChatGPT plan, so many people already have it
  • Cloud tasks let you start work from anywhere and come back later
  • Strong on tough, multi-file coding jobs
  • The CLI is open source and works with an API key
  • One key and one bill for nearly every model worth using
  • No markup on model prices, only a small fee on top-ups
  • Fallbacks and routing keep apps running when a provider fails
  • Free models and launch-day access make it cheap to experiment
  • Good privacy defaults, with no prompt logging unless you opt in
Cons
  • No free tier, and the Pro usage cap can run out in an afternoon of heavy work
  • The terminal is intimidating for non-developers at first
  • It will happily change things you did not ask about unless you set boundaries
  • Costs on Max or the API add up fast for teams
  • Anthropic cut weekly Claude Code limits by about 17% on 14 September, and limits may shift again
  • Five-hour and weekly limits bite on Plus if you use it seriously
  • Cloud tasks use more of your allowance than local ones
  • It asks fewer questions than Claude Code before changing things
  • Model names and limits change often, which makes it hard to plan costs
  • The $200 Pro tier now gives new subscribers less usage than before
  • Output quality and speed depend on which provider serves the request, and some hosts are noticeably worse
  • Free models are rate limited, often busy and throw 429 errors at peak times
  • Unused credit can expire after a year and refunds are only offered within 24 hours
  • Support is slow by most accounts, and Trustpilot reviews are poor (about 1.6 out of 5)
  • It is an API tool first, so non-technical users get little beyond the basic chat room
