Which plan to pickStart on Pro. It is enough to build a small site or tool in evenings and weekends. If you hit the limit most days, Max 5x is the next step; it costs five times as much but usually works out cheaper than paying for the API directly. Max also lets you spend up to half your weekly limit on Fable, which Pro only gets through paid credits.Pro at $20 is the place to start, and it is the only sensible way to try the cloud agent. Watch your quota for the first fortnight, and use cheaper models for routine jobs before deciding whether Max or Teams is worth it.If you already have ChatGPT Plus, you have Codex: just try it. If you are choosing between this and Claude Code with no existing subscription, Plus at $20 and Claude Pro at $20 cost the same, so pick whichever chat assistant you prefer. If you outgrow Plus, Pro starts at $100 and has no five-hour limit for now. The $200 tier gives new subscribers less usage than it used to, and Ultrafast mode is only on the $500 tier.

Pros and cons

AttributeClaude CodeDevinOpenAI Codex
Pros
  • Finishes real tasks end to end, not just suggestions you have to apply
  • Best-in-class at understanding a whole codebase before it changes anything
  • Runs in the terminal, desktop app, web, phone and the main editors
  • CLAUDE.md, Skills and MCPs make it fit your way of working
  • One Claude subscription covers both chat and coding
  • Truly hands-off: it works in the background and returns a pull request
  • Editor, cloud agent, terminal and code review on one subscription
  • Picks up tasks from Slack, Teams, Linear and Jira
  • Wide model choice, including cheap open models and its own SWE-2
  • New frontier models usually arrive within days of launch
  • Included with every ChatGPT plan, so many people already have it
  • Cloud tasks let you start work from anywhere and come back later
  • Strong on tough, multi-file coding jobs
  • The CLI is open source and works with an API key
Cons
  • No free tier, and the Pro usage cap can run out in an afternoon of heavy work
  • The terminal is intimidating for non-developers at first
  • It will happily change things you did not ask about unless you set boundaries
  • Costs on Max or the API add up fast for teams
  • Anthropic cut weekly Claude Code limits by about 17% on 14 September, and limits may shift again
  • Success drops sharply on vague or complex tasks, so a developer still has to review everything
  • The daily and weekly quota is opaque, and good models can use a day's allowance in minutes
  • The free SWE-2 model, a big reason people subscribe, goes back to paid use after 1 November 2026
  • Users report slow support, including over unexpected on-demand charges
  • The Windsurf-to-Devin switch left gaps between the desktop and cloud versions, and some leftover clutter
  • Five-hour and weekly limits bite on Plus if you use it seriously
  • Cloud tasks use more of your allowance than local ones
  • It asks fewer questions than Claude Code before changing things
  • Model names and limits change often, which makes it hard to plan costs
  • The $200 Pro tier now gives new subscribers less usage than before
