What is it?

Copilot is Microsoft's assistant. The free version chats, searches the web and generates images, and it is built into Windows, Edge and the Copilot app on your phone.

The real draw is the paid version that lives inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. It can draft a document from your notes, make sense of a spreadsheet, build a first-pass slide deck or summarise an email thread without you leaving the app.

If your business runs on Microsoft 365, this is the assistant that needs no extra setup. If it doesn't, the free chat alone is not a reason to switch from Claude or ChatGPT.

Who it's for

Businesses and individuals who spend their day in Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.

Best for

  • Summarising long Outlook threads
  • First drafts in Word
  • Explaining and tidying spreadsheets
  • Quick slide decks in PowerPoint

Why it made the list

It is the only assistant that sits natively inside the Office apps most workplaces already pay for.
