Sequential Thinking

Makes Claude plan hard problems step by step, revising and branching as it goes.

What is it?

Sequential Thinking gives Claude a notepad for reasoning. Instead of answering in one go, Claude writes its thinking as numbered steps, and it can go back to fix a step or branch off to test another idea. It's one of the official reference servers from the Model Context Protocol project, and it shows up on nearly every "essential MCPs" list.

It does no thinking of its own. It gives Claude a structure, which helps most on messy planning jobs: a migration, a launch plan, a bug with several possible causes.

Be realistic about it in Claude Code. Newer Claude models already think step by step, so the gain is smaller than it used to be, and every step is a separate tool call that uses up tokens. It earns its place most in Claude Desktop, or whenever you want to watch the reasoning unfold.

What Claude can do once it's connected

  • Break a hard problem into numbered steps before acting
  • Go back and revise an earlier step when something new comes up
  • Branch off to try a different approach, then compare
  • Add or drop steps as the problem turns out bigger or smaller
  • Form a hypothesis and check it before giving an answer

Install in Claude Code

Open your terminal in the project folder and run:

Command
claude mcp add sequential-thinking -- npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking

Or add this to your project's .mcp.json:

.mcp.json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "sequential-thinking": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@modelcontextprotocol/server-sequential-thinking"]
    }
  }
}
