Which plan to pickStart on Pro. It is enough to build a small site or tool in evenings and weekends. If you hit the limit most days, Max 5x is the next step; it costs five times as much but usually works out cheaper than paying for the API directly. Max also lets you spend up to half your weekly limit on Fable, which Pro only gets through paid credits.Stay free if you only download models or use HuggingChat. Pay the $9 for PRO the moment you want to host a demo or use GPU Spaces regularly. Anything heavier, like a private model for your app, is billed by the hour on top.If you already have ChatGPT Plus, you have Codex: just try it. If you are choosing between this and Claude Code with no existing subscription, Plus at $20 and Claude Pro at $20 cost the same, so pick whichever chat assistant you prefer. If you outgrow Plus, Pro starts at $100 and has no five-hour limit for now. The $200 tier gives new subscribers less usage than it used to, and Ultrafast mode is only on the $500 tier.

Pros and cons

AttributeClaude CodeHugging FaceOpenAI Codex
Pros
  • Finishes real tasks end to end, not just suggestions you have to apply
  • Best-in-class at understanding a whole codebase before it changes anything
  • Runs in the terminal, desktop app, web, phone and the main editors
  • CLAUDE.md, Skills and MCPs make it fit your way of working
  • One Claude subscription covers both chat and coding
  • Nearly every open model is published here, usually on launch day
  • Free to browse, download and try thousands of demos
  • PRO at $9 a month is cheap for what it adds
  • Inference Providers charge the providers' prices with no markup
  • Open-source libraries and Chat UI can be run on your own servers
  • Included with every ChatGPT plan, so many people already have it
  • Cloud tasks let you start work from anywhere and come back later
  • Strong on tough, multi-file coding jobs
  • The CLI is open source and works with an API key
Cons
  • No free tier, and the Pro usage cap can run out in an afternoon of heavy work
  • The terminal is intimidating for non-developers at first
  • It will happily change things you did not ask about unless you set boundaries
  • Costs on Max or the API add up fast for teams
  • Anthropic cut weekly Claude Code limits by about 17% on 14 September, and limits may shift again
  • Built for developers, so most of it is hard going for non-technical users
  • Free GPU time is a few minutes a day and ZeroGPU queues can be long
  • New free accounts lost free CPU Spaces in July 2026, with no clear announcement
  • Anyone can upload, so trending lists get gamed and some repositories have hidden malware
  • Users report slow support, and paid GPU Spaces can bill while waiting for hardware
  • Five-hour and weekly limits bite on Plus if you use it seriously
  • Cloud tasks use more of your allowance than local ones
  • It asks fewer questions than Claude Code before changing things
  • Model names and limits change often, which makes it hard to plan costs
  • The $200 Pro tier now gives new subscribers less usage than before
