Which plan to pickIf you have Plus already, you are set; its deep research allowance covers most people. Do not buy ChatGPT just for research unless you also want the rest of it, because Perplexity Pro costs less and is faster. Pro is only worth it if you run reports every day.Stay on Free until it stops you doing something. If that happens, Google AI Pro is the sensible step because it also upgrades Gemini and Deep Research, which you will probably want anyway. AI Plus is a cheap middle step if NotebookLM is all you care about.Free is genuinely enough for most people. Pay for Individual only if you are writing prompts all day and the style matching would save you editing time. Check the Team price on the site; it was not shown on the pricing page when we looked.

Pros and cons

AttributeChatGPT Deep ResearchNotebookLMPrompt Cowboy
Pros
  • Clarifying questions up front mean fewer wasted runs
  • Among the most complete and well-structured reports of the three
  • Runs in the background and notifies you when done
  • Can bring your own files and connected apps into the research
  • Exports to PDF with charts and tables
  • Answers only from your sources and cites the exact passage
  • Free plan is big enough for most small businesses
  • Accepts PDFs, Docs, websites, YouTube and audio as sources
  • Audio Overviews are a clever way to get people to engage with research
  • Simple enough that you can hand it to anyone on the team
  • Zero setup; the free plan is unlimited
  • Visibly improves the answers you get from Claude or ChatGPT
  • Teaches you prompt structure by example
  • Cheap paid plan with writing-style matching
Cons
  • Slowest of the three; 10 to 30 minutes is normal
  • Free and Go allowances are tiny and described only as limited
  • Reports run long and occasionally cite weak sources
  • Pro usage allowances have been cut for new subscribers
  • Will not research the open web unless you explicitly ask it to find sources
  • Answers can be surface-level on dense material; you still need to read the key parts
  • Audio Overviews take a few minutes and sound alike after a while
  • No way to script or automate it; everything happens in the browser
  • A single feature rather than a product; you may outgrow it in weeks
  • Extra copy and paste step for every prompt
  • No integrations, API or browser extension that we could confirm
  • Small team, so features and prices shift often
