Which plan to pickIf you have Plus already, you are set; its deep research allowance covers most people. Do not buy ChatGPT just for research unless you also want the rest of it, because Perplexity Pro costs less and is faster. Pro is only worth it if you run reports every day.Start free. The monthly $10 of credit is plenty for one person using it from Claude Code, and if you do run out you only pay for what you use. Enterprise is for software companies, not for a business that just wants better search.Pro is the one. The free plan is too tight to judge research mode properly, and Max only makes sense if you want the Computer agent or you hit Pro limits every day. Businesses with a few people on it should look at Enterprise Pro for the admin controls.

Pros and cons

AttributeChatGPT Deep ResearchExaPerplexity (Research)
Pros
  • Clarifying questions up front mean fewer wasted runs
  • Among the most complete and well-structured reports of the three
  • Runs in the background and notifies you when done
  • Can bring your own files and connected apps into the research
  • Exports to PDF with charts and tables
  • Finds pages by meaning, so vague descriptions still work
  • Free credit resets every month and needs no card
  • Hosted connection for Claude Code takes minutes to set up
  • Returns clean page text ready for an AI to read
  • Pay as you go with no subscription
  • Reports land in minutes, not the quarter hour Gemini and ChatGPT often take
  • Every claim is linked, so you can check the ones that matter
  • Lets you pick which AI model answers on paid plans
  • Official connector for Claude Code and Claude Desktop
  • Good apps for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android
Cons
  • Slowest of the three; 10 to 30 minutes is normal
  • Free and Go allowances are tiny and described only as limited
  • Reports run long and occasionally cite weak sources
  • Pro usage allowances have been cut for new subscribers
  • Not much to use on its own; you need Claude or another assistant in front of it
  • Setup assumes some comfort with plugins or settings files
  • Per-request pricing is hard to predict if an agent runs away with searches
  • No mobile or desktop app, because it is a service rather than a product
  • Free plan allows just one research run a month
  • Cites weak sources as confidently as strong ones
  • Only sees what is published on the open web; useless for your own documents
  • Usage limits on Pro are described as average use rather than a clear number
