Which plan to pickFree is only for testing; you'll hit the 1,000-record cap fast. Team is the plan for nearly everyone, and billing yearly saves about 17 percent. Keep editor seats to the people who actually change data, since viewers and form fillers are free.Free is enough to build and show a prototype. Pro at $25 is good value because the price covers your whole team rather than each seat. Self-host only if you already run servers; the time it takes to keep one patched quickly costs more than $25 a month.Don't start here for a weekend project; Neon or Supabase are free. When a product has paying customers, the $15 high-availability Postgres is the sensible entry point. Only go to Metal once Insights shows the disk is the slow part.

Pros and cons

AttributeAirtableAppwritePlanetScale
Pros

  • Views, forms and automations built in
  • Only editors pay; viewers and form fillers are free
  • Connects to every automation tool going
  • Interfaces let you build simple internal apps without code
  • Everything in one place, including messaging and hosting
  • Open source and self-hostable for free
  • Pro pricing covers the whole team, not per seat
  • Strong mobile and Flutter support
  • Permissions down to the individual record
  • Top-tier speed and reliability, proven at enormous scale
  • High availability and automatic failover as standard on production plans
  • Safe, zero-downtime schema changes
  • Both Postgres and MySQL on offer
  • Excellent slow-query reporting
Cons
  • Per-seat pricing gets expensive once a team grows
  • Free plan caps at 1,000 records per base
  • Not built to power a public app with thousands of users
  • Record limits per base mean big datasets need splitting up
  • Much smaller community and fewer tutorials than Supabase or Firebase
  • Few AI app builders support it out of the box
  • Document database makes SQL-style reporting harder
  • SSO is still marked as coming soon
  • No free plan
  • Pricing is by server size and add-ons, so the real bill is hard to work out
  • Only the database; no auth, storage or functions
  • Overkill for anything that isn't live with paying users
