Which plan to pickBuild on Free. Switch to Pro the day you share the app with anyone outside your team, mostly so the project stops pausing. Team is a big jump that only makes sense once a client or auditor asks for SSO or a SOC 2 report.Don't start here for a weekend project; Neon or Supabase are free. When a product has paying customers, the $15 high-availability Postgres is the sensible entry point. Only go to Metal once Insights shows the disk is the slow part.Build everything on Free, where the only real limit is the API rate cap. Essential is the plan you launch on. Pro only earns its keep if you're an agency running several client backends in one account.

Pros and cons

AttributeSupabasePlanetScaleXano
Pros

Cons

  • Usage charges on Pro can be hard to predict as traffic grows
  • Access rules and SQL still take some learning for non-technical people
  • The jump from Pro to Team is steep
  • No free plan
  • Pricing is by server size and add-ons, so the real bill is hard to work out
  • Only the database; no auth, storage or functions
  • Overkill for anything that isn't live with paying users
  • Expensive: the first paid plan is $99 a month
  • Free plan rate limits make it unusable for anything live
