Which plan to pickStart free. The monthly $10 of credit is plenty for one person using it from Claude Code, and if you do run out you only pay for what you use. Enterprise is for software companies, not for a business that just wants better search.Stay on Free until it stops you doing something. If that happens, Google AI Pro is the sensible step because it also upgrades Gemini and Deep Research, which you will probably want anyway. AI Plus is a cheap middle step if NotebookLM is all you care about.Start on Free. If you find yourself rationing the 10 Pro messages, Pro billed yearly is good value at $12 a month. Deep is only for people whose job is literature reviews; most readers here will never need it.

Pros and cons

AttributeExaNotebookLMConsensus
Pros
  • Finds pages by meaning, so vague descriptions still work
  • Free credit resets every month and needs no card
  • Hosted connection for Claude Code takes minutes to set up
  • Returns clean page text ready for an AI to read
  • Pay as you go with no subscription
  • Answers only from your sources and cites the exact passage
  • Free plan is big enough for most small businesses
  • Accepts PDFs, Docs, websites, YouTube and audio as sources
  • Audio Overviews are a clever way to get people to engage with research
  • Simple enough that you can hand it to anyone on the team
  • Consensus Meter gives an honest read on mixed evidence in seconds
  • Every summary links to the actual paper
  • Free plan is enough for occasional checks
  • Pro is cheap when billed yearly
  • Quality filters help you ignore weak studies
Cons
  • Not much to use on its own; you need Claude or another assistant in front of it
  • Setup assumes some comfort with plugins or settings files
  • Per-request pricing is hard to predict if an agent runs away with searches
  • No mobile or desktop app, because it is a service rather than a product
  • Will not research the open web unless you explicitly ask it to find sources
  • Answers can be surface-level on dense material; you still need to read the key parts
  • Audio Overviews take a few minutes and sound alike after a while
  • No way to script or automate it; everything happens in the browser
  • Only covers academic research; no business or news sources
  • Can make thin or old evidence look more settled than it is
  • Monthly billing on Pro is nearly double the yearly rate
  • Deep review limits are low until you pay for the Deep plan
